Hawthorne is a neighborhood in the Northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C..〔Amy Reinink, (The District's Hawthorne neighborhood an enclave of trees and safety ), ''Washington Post'' (December 20, 2013).〕 "According to neighborhood lore," the subdivision was named for the hawthorn trees once abundant in the area.〔 The neighborhood is bounded by Pinehurst Tributary to the south, Western Avenue to the northwest, and Rock Creek Park to the east.〔 Hawthorne is comprised of about 250 houses.〔 The area is part of the Chevy Chase Citizens Association and residents consider themselves residents of Chevy Chase.〔 The neighborhood is known for its abundance of mature trees and green space.〔〔Robbie Feinberg & John Hines, (Door To Door: Arlington Ridge, Va. and Hawthorne, D.C. ), WAMU (May 10, 2013).〕 Most of the neighborhood's housing stock was built in the 1950s.〔 Ranch-style and split-level homes predominate, although there are some Colonial, Cape Cod, and modern-style homes.〔 Most schoolchildren in the area attend Lafayette Elementary School, Deal Middle School, and Woodrow Wilson High School.〔 In 2013, twelve houses in the area were sold, for prices ranging from $675,000 to $1.85 million.〔 ==Notes==
